News: Driver hurt after manhole cover smashes into vehicle in Waltham

September 3, 2020

WALTHAM, MA – A driver was hurt in Waltham yesterday when a manhole cover lifted off the ground and collided with his vehicle, according to CBS Boston.

The accident happened on Wyman Street Wednesday afternoon when a 200-pound manhole cover was sent airborne by some sort of underground blast, possibly caused by equipment failure, natural gas, or issues with electrical transformers.

The driver, Douglas man Kirk Murphy, was knocked unconscious by the blast. He was taken to the hospital with painful injuries.

Murphy is asking authorities for an explanation for the blast and an assurance that it won’t affect other drivers in the future.
