Understanding Your Injury

In order to truly understand the injury to your neck, you must know the anatomy of the spine. The neck is made up of the top seven vertebrae of the spine. You may have heard this referred to as the cervical spine. In between the vertebrae are spongy discs that exist to allow bending, twisting, and other movements. These discs act as shock absorbers to protect the spine while moving.

In addition to the vertebrae and discs, there are a multitude of surrounding soft tissues, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. An injury to this area of the body can be extremely painful because so many important areas can be damaged. Damage to a nerve can be particularly troublesome.

The nerves connected with the neck area send messages to the arms and hands. Though the cervical spine is very flexible, injury often results from sudden movement, whiplash, or trauma. The risk of damage to this area is increased as a result of limited muscle support. The neck is particularly susceptible to damage because this area of the spine is responsible for supporting the weight of the head.

Common Neck Injuries

Here is a look at common neck injuries resulting from car accidents.

Neck Sprain: Ligaments are in charge of connecting bones to stabilize joints. When a ligament is stretched or torn in the neck, a sprain results. A sprain is generally characterized by pain and stiffness.

neck-2Neck Strain: There are a multitude of muscles in and around the neck. When a muscle is stretched or torn, a strain results. These injuries are often referred to as “pulled muscles.” A neck strain most regularly results from a sudden and unexpected movement.

Neck sprains and strains are often referred to by medical professionals as “hyperflexion/hyperextension” injuries. For the layman, they are more commonly called “whiplash.”

Cervical Radiculopathy (pinched nerve): As previously mentioned, nerves in the neck area send messages down and into the arms and hands. The nerves supply electrical signals to muscles that operate to move your extremities. When a nerve is pinched or otherwise damaged, the nerve’s proper function is jeopardized. A damaged nerve can result in weakness, numbness or tingling, and pain.

Herniated or Bulging Disc: Too much pressure on a disc can result in a disc herniation. These injuries are sometimes referred to as “slipped” or “ruptured” discs. Imagine the disc as a jelly donut that is supporting the area between two vertebrae. In a herniated disc, the jelly comes out of the donut. A tear in a disc can result in pressure against spinal nerves, which can be extremely painful.

Common Neck Injury Symptoms

An injury to the neck may not be obvious after a car accident. Sometimes it may take a few days, weeks, or even months to feel the negative affects associated with your injury. You may feel pain or discomfort in other areas of the body as well. Common symptoms of neck injuries include:

  • Pain in or around the neck or cervical spine
  • Shoulder pain, arm pain, or hand pain
  • Constant or troubling headaches
  • Reduced range of motion in the area of your neck
  • Numbness, pins and needles, tingling, or slower reflexes
  • Muscle spasm
