The town of Salem has a very interesting history. The town was first established as a fishing settlement in the early 1600s by England’s Dorchester Company. It was named “Fishing Place” by the Native Americans and thrived on fishing and farming. It gets its name from the Hebrew word for peace, “Shalom.” While fishing was an integral part of Salem’s economy and is still a part of the town, it is most known as the place of the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692.
The Salem Witch Trials
Seventeenth century life in the Massachusetts Bay Colony was stressful and colonists often looked for something or someone to blame for the hardship. A small pox epidemic and threats of attacks from neighboring Native American tribes created an undertone of fear and suspicion in the town. Colonists had a strong belief in the devil and blamed the recent illness and threats of violence on the devil’s work: witchcraft.
In January 1692, the daughter of Reverend Parris became ill. The doctor was called, but she failed to get better. Dr. Griggs diagnosed her with bewitchment. This diagnosis ultimately set into effect a witch-hunt that ended in the hanging death of 19 men and women. Many others were imprisoned and lives were forever changed.
In June 1692, the Court of Oyer and Terminer (the courts that hear and decide) sat in Salem and heard cases of witchcraft. When a person was found guilty, they were hanged. After 19 hangings, the court was disbanded and a new court released those being held on suspicion of witchcraft and pardoned those that were awaiting execution.
This is a much-studied time in history. It is often used to compare other episodes of suspicion and hysteria that have occurred such as the McCarthy hearings and fear of Communism of the 1950s. In addition to being of interest to historians and sociologists, many tourists come to visit Salem to enjoy this history. In fact, Salem is one of the most visited places during Halloween.
